Methodology
Collection
Prices are reported by the public, members and paid panel missions, in markets, shops, fuel stations and bus stations. Each report gives the price paid, quantity, place and date; a photo is optional.
Checks
A report more than 60% away from the city’s 30-day median is flagged as an outlier and checked by hand; the same item reported at the same place on the same day by the same person is a duplicate. Reports from reliable members are validated automatically, with a mark.
Statistics
For each item and city: median, trimmed mean (10% removed on each side), minimum, maximum, number of reports, 30-day and 12-month change. The median is robust to extreme prices.
Index
The index tracks the cost of a fixed basket of 30 items weighted by their share of household spending. Each month, the price change of each item is weighted and chained to the previous month. It is published monthly with a comment from the team.
Limitations
Participatory reports are not a random sample: coverage and report counts are shown. Rents and some services vary widely by neighbourhood. The index does not replace the official INSD index: it complements it, faster and city by city.
Open data
The CA-DATA-PRIX dataset (anonymised verified reports and indices) is regenerated monthly under the ODbL licence; the public API returns daily aggregates, never an individual report.
